That night after the supper dishes were cleaned, Bella grabbed her phone and walked outside. She needed to call Jacob back. She dialed his number, but he didn’t answer. Guess that served her right, but he should understand that she didn’t want to be disturbed earlier while her parents were still here.

She called him back and this time he answered.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Jacob. I was just calling you back from earlier. Sorry I didn’t answer the phone, but Mom and Dad were about to leave, and I wanted to spend some time with them.”

“That’s okay. I understand. So what time did they leave?”

“Some time after twelve.”

“Oh, okay. So are you going to be at church on Sunday?”

“I want to come, but I don’t have any way to get there”—Bella paused—“Guess I didn’t think about not having a vehicle when I told the kids I’d see them this Sunday.”

“So you don’t have a way here?”

“Nope.”

“Hold on a second, Bella.”

“Okay.” Bella paced outside under the stars while she waited for Jacob to get back on the phone. She really wanted to go to church with Jacob on Sunday, but she had no way to get there.

“Okay. I’m back. Sorry about that. Mom was talking to me.”

“That’s okay.”

“Anyway, Mom wanted to know if you wanted to come stay here tomorrow night since we have that extra bedroom.”

Bella thought for a second.

“Like I told you before, I don’t have any way to get there, so I couldn’t come tomorrow.”

“That’s okay. I can come get you. What time do you want me to come?”

“Um… Hold on a second.”

Bella walked inside and over to where Teresa was sitting on the couch.

“Hey, Teresa. Are we doing any more shopping tomorrow?” Bella put her hand over the phone.

Teresa put her finger on her chin. “Um… I don’t think so. Let’s see. We have my wedding dress and shoes, the bridesmaids’ and your dresses and shoes, the songs I’m going to have in my wedding…” Teresa’s voice faded away while she mentally checked things off her list. She shook her head. “No. We are through with the shopping.”

Bella nodded and walked back outside. “Jacob? You still there?”

“Yea. I’m here.”

“Okay. How early can you come pick me up tomorrow?”

“Let me think”—silence—“I think I could be there by 10:30 a.m. Is that too early?”

“No, that’s fine. I’ll be ready.”

“All right.” Bella could hear the smile in his voice.

Once they had said goodbye, Bella walked back inside and sat down on the couch. Teresa looked at her.

“So tell me. What are you doing with Jacob tomorrow?”

Bella looked at her best friend. “How did you know it was Jacob?”

“Oh, come on, Bella. Every time you talk about him or are talking with him you have this twinkle in your eyes.” Teresa nudged Bella with her elbow.

Bella smiled. “Oh all right. You got me. Jacob is coming by at 10:30 a.m. to pick me up. I am staying in the Comets’ guest room, so I could be there for Sunday, since I don’t have a ride to get there.
